The miniature map shows the Mughal Empire, extending over large parts of the Indian subcontinent.


The map-maker Johann Ulrich Müller, born in Ulm, Germany, was schooled in Jena as a building inspector and constructor. In 1692 he published his famous miniature atlas Kurtzbündige Abbild- u. Vorstellung d. Gantzen Welt, Worinnen alle … in Teutschland Belegene Königreiche … bemerket werden, with 95 miniature maps.

A year later he was appointed by Karl Gustav von Baden-Durlach as map-maker of „a theatre of war“ – maps showing constalations of battles, which served for military puropses. They were published in a book Theatrum Martis. From the beginning of the 17th century on Müller was also known as  maker of sun-dails and scientific instruments.
