View of Derbent, the southernmost city in Russia from a scarce series of city views by Daniel de la Feuille (1640-1709). Engraving shows the ancient fortress and ruins of a city. Derbent was an important fort in the Middle East on the Silk route from the ancient times on. From 16th to the end of the 19th century Debent belonged to Persia. It was occasionally briefly taken by the Ottomans and Russians.
With highly decorative original colouring. Numbered in the upper right white margin, otherwise in a good condition.
The engraver Daniel de la Feuille came fom a family of engravers from Amsterdam, mostly known by their small format views and maps. This view comes from a rare small atlas 'Atlas Portatif, ou le nouveau Theatre de la Guerre en Europe; Contenants les cartes geographiques, avec les plans des Villes & Forteresses les plus exposees aux revolutions presentes' published in amsterdam in 1706.
