Large 4°. [27] calligraphically printed text on hand made paper, 10 interleaved etchings with original colour, all signed by the author and with paper guards, original vellum binging with gilt embossed decoration on covers and spine (Very Good, binding slightly dusty with minor wear).

An elaborately printed book on hand made paper with 10 originally coloured etchings by a German artist Richard von Below (1879 – 1925) include translations of the poems by a classic Arab philosopher and poet Abu al-ʿAlaʾ al-Maʿarri, known for his irreligious worldview.

The original hand coloured etchings were made by German artist Richard von Below (1879 – 1925). Educated as a lawyer, von Below soon redirected his interests in painting and printmaking. He studied art in Paris at Maurice Utrillo, and spent the WWI on the Russian front. After the war he lived in Bavaria until his death in 1925.

This is a numbered example 52 from 210 printed copies, of which the first 60 examples were hand coloured. It is bound in an original vellum with embossed gilt decoration in oriental style.
