CHARLATAN BROADSIDE: Wonderful and Amusing. Astonishing Experiments upon the highly interesting subject of Thusology or Biology. The Electrical Science of Life will be given by A.S. Pearce & J.J. Hatch...

An unusual broadside is an invitation to a mind reading and mind controlling charlatan show, camouflaged in a series pseudoscientific words, probably performed in New York in mid-19th century.

Author: Anon.
Place and Year: [United States, probably New York, mid 19th century].
Technique: Broadside. Letterpress (Very Good, soft folds, small tears in margins, small stain in the upper part) 30 x 14,5 cm (11,8 x 5,7 inches).
Code: 65773

A broadside with empty space for the date and place, was made as an invitation to a performance of Thusology or Biology, The Electrical Science of Life by A. S. Pearce and J. J. Hatch.

A contemporary book Book of human nature: illustrating the philosophy (new theory) of instinct, nutrition, life… by La Roy Sunderland, printed in 1853 in New York (p. 170), explains the terms used on the broadside:

It is curious to read some of the terms which various lec-

turers have brought, or attempted to bring into use, when

speaking of the science or fact of spiritual, or human influence.

One calls it "absorption," another "psycodunamy," another

"etherology," another "neurology," and yet, another dubs it

with the euphonious and classical term of "thusology," or,

worse than all, "mental alchemy !"
